In a couple of weeks ago the author of this humble analyze attended in a conference about Hong Kong-Taiwan relations in Taiwan’s capital city Taipei. It was a very nice exchange with different government workers, legislators and teachers from both sides. All the participants and legislators shared their opinions about Hong Kong and Taiwan’s position between Mainland China affairs. However, unfortunately short discussion about Taiwan’s future and Hong Kong’s position was not enough to understand the situation between 2 places.
The conference was held by KMT (Chinese Nationalist Party) party and that’s why we just saw one side of the opinions. Maybe some opposite party members would join and speak out their ideas about the topic. It would be better to see opposite party members too. In this analyze paper the author wants to show what he understood from speaker’s speech during the conference and share their opinions with Turkey. .
Opinions about different participants
Mr. Zhu: Mr. Zhu said that HK is an important place and will be important place too in the future. He gave some numbers about tourists between TW and HK. He pointed out the increase in trade between two places. He called the investors to invest in HK. If investments increase from TW, this will boost the economic development of both sides. HK is an Expo center and for Taiwanese businessman it is a very easy place to go and join the international fairs. He said the Visa problem between HK and TW must be solved a soon as possible. This is very important step for both sides. Businessmen and visitors can handle their Visa regulations easier and travel faster.
Mr. Chen: Mr. Chen talked about more religious affairs between two sides. He thinks that Christian students need more opportunity to study in HK and TW. He wants more exchange between HK and TW. He pointed out that Taiwan needs to discuss with Beijing. Because, HK is not decision maker for Mainland China and Taiwan relations. He suggested stronger relations between Taipei and Beijing would help Taiwan in international arena.
Mr. Long: He is a Daoism follower and thinks that in many things from TW can be very good examples for HK. He wants more and stronger relations between HK and TW. He pointed out the ideas that “Build a common base to solve the problems between two sides.”
Mrs. Liang: She thinks education opportunities are very important between two sides. HK must invest TW. Taiwan has better understanding of Chinese culture and HK can learn from this experience. HK, TW people and other Chinese who live abroad have helped Mainland’s economy. They invested in many areas. HK has its own culture in Chinese culture. TW has also its own culture; especially Taiwan aborigines have many colorful traditions. These cultures must be presented well and protected well. Mainland China can learn and understand these cultures. In her speech, Mrs. Liang focused on cultural part of the two sides.
Mr. Yang: Mr. Yang thinks that HK is still an important platform for TW and Mainland. He thinks direct flight and economic ties are good for Mainland and TW. Hong Kong is very close to TW and much valuable information comes from there. HK is an academic platform for TW. However, HK needs TW’s help about China studies and Chinese culture.
Mr. Fan: Mr. Fan pointed out the international power of HK. However, Mr. Fan underlined the changing position of HK. He thinks that the importance of HK is not same as in the past because it is now the part of PRC (People’s Republic of China). HK needs to boost its position and needs to strengthen its position internationally and locally. Mr. Fan’s point is TW must have good cards in its hand. Roles of the cities must be preserved. For example Fujian is getting more important and this could affect TW negatively. Mr. Fan thinks a policy which supports the developing places must be well done.
Mr. Li: Mr. Li focused more on Tourism industry. From his perspective visa problems must be solved quickly. HK and TW need more tourists from both sides. HK opened to the world before TW and Taiwan can use HK’s experience in opening to the world. He emphasized TW needs more hotel investments. HK is a good example for international and local tourism investments.
Conclusion
The author thinks that Taiwan needs to understand both the Mainland and Hong Kong’s position thoroughly. The author supports the idea of strengthening the economical, political and cultural ties between Mainland and Hong Kong. We can not deny that there is no China in the world (Some Democratic Party supporters still defending this idea but it harms Taiwan), so Taiwanese people can (need to) discuss the matters between Mainland legislators.
Hong Kong was a stage for Taiwan in the past. However direct ties with Mainland can give Taiwan more advantages in many affairs. The author believes Chinese people from both sides can solve the problems. However, they need to be patient and respectful each other. The most important key is they need to understand their differences.
Hong Kong’s today’s position maybe would be the Taiwan’s future but the author supports Taiwan gets another role in the Chinese politics. The author is sure that Taiwan is the part of China (but not the PRC) but the author is not agree with the people that thinks that Mainland will control everything in this land, in this small island (Taiwan) 23 Million Chinese people have their own rights to survive and enjoy democratic freedom in political affairs. The author of this analyzes thinks that, Taiwanese people never agree the get second class rights between Cross-Strait Affairs. They must be equal as all Chinese people in whole China. Common history, common culture, common rights and common future are the main criteria for two sides. This is the author’s motto about Taiwan’s future. Economic ties must be strengthened, Mainland must invest this island and Taiwanese businessman must carry some high tech from Taiwan to Mainland. Banks, private schools, private hospitals and more investments must be done by both sides. Mainland would open the international way to Taiwan. Sure the world has one China (Taiwan’s name in its constitution is Republic of China). But in the international communities, Taiwanese people must have their own rights. Mainland can learn many things from Taiwan and Taiwan’s modern life would be an example for Mainland China. Chinese people must act together. If Chinese people act together with respect each other they would have more effect in world’s economy, politics and future.
